Michael Marmarinos

Regisseur, Schauspieler

Regisseur, Theaterleiter, Schauspieler

Born in Athens.
He studied biology (major: Neurobiology), acting and theatre.

In 1983-4, he founded the «diplous Eros theatre ensemble» in Athens, renamed to “Theseum Ensemble” (TE) in 2003. Since 1997, TE possesses a space in the Athens historical city centre, «theseum-A THEATRE FOR THE ARTS», an old warehouse that has been transformed into an international centre for the presentation of the Arts, which is being offered for international collaborations and presentations of groups and solo artists from Europe and elsewhere.

Two persisting beliefs run through his work:
a) Theatre is the art on the humble history of the people.
b) There is no moment in every day life that isn’t theatre, once the right gaze is there.

The last years in his directing he is obviously preoccupied by three matters:

Ι. He has always been attracted by gatherings. This tension of the people towards gatherings... He begun to work on the concept of Chorus in the ancient Greek drama, as an ancient structure that produces contemporary forms within the theatre and every-day life, a structure with excellent qualities,a structure capable of producing theatre, text, chaos, history, politics. A structure/ device of the contemporary gaze. Speeches, conferences, workshops, and teachings on Chorus as a concept and structure of the real life, of modern and classical drama :Athens, Delfi, Berlin, Salonica, Los Angeles, Montreal.

ΙΙ. In which ways a certain personality – the body of a citizen posessing the quality of an actor – can push himself to the point of getting trapped within reality, within the Accidental– as a method of acting identity - thus turning himself into a «document».

Biology and his meeting with A.Lowen and Bioenergetics Analysis in 1990, have played a major part in this.

Workshops on Bioenergetics as a method of acting education, and also participation in international congresses of the International Institute of Bioenergetics Analysis: many times in Athens, Leipsig, Caracas, Copenhagen, Salonica, Firenze.

ΙΙΙ. Finally, the ways and moments of every-day life, the insignificant and coincidental moments that can «poison» theatre, pushing it violently towards poetry and documentary.

This kind of writing tactics, capable of producing a text, is what he usually names «DIRECTING AS PLAYWRITING»
